The Ohel Minyan creates a place to remember loved ones who have passed. Every morning service offers multiple moments to recite the Mourner's Kaddish, a prayer recited by people in mourning (avelut) and at the anniversary of a loved one's death (yahrzeit). Reciting the kaddish at prayer services (minyan) is a way to honor your loved one's memory.
Saying kaddish supports the mourner and, at the same time, builds community. Precisely when we are bereft, Jewish tradition propels us to be with others: traditionally, mourner's kaddish can only be recited when ten or more Jews over the age of b-mitzvah gather together. We aim to have at least ten Jews at minyan every day we meet (Sunday through Friday mornings).
We at the Ohel Minyan began to gather for daily morning prayers in 2021, when several people in the community had just lost a parent and wanted to be able to say kaddish. Since then, countless people have joined us in their own times of grief and made it possible for others to do the same. Now, when you join us for the yahrzeit of a loved one, you not only honor their memory but also build up the daily morning minyan.
We meet Monday through Friday mornings at 8:15 AM at the CBI Water Building, and Sundays and Federal holidays at 9:00 AM. (On Rosh Hodesh, the beginning of the new lunar month, minyan meets in the CBI sanctuary; those dates are listed on our calendar.)
Ohel Minyan volunteers reach out to remind people in our community of their upcoming yahrzeits. If you would like a reminder for your upcoming yahrzeit, please fill out this form for each person whom you wish to remember at minyan. You can let us know if you'd like to say a few words about the person you're remembering or sponsor a light nosh after services.
